About us

Tuomaala Farm is located in Ottele/Päijälä (formerly Längelmäki), in the southeastern part of Orivesi, Eastern Pirkanmaa. It rests on the shores of Lake Pitkävesi, known for its clean water and rich fish population. The distance to central Orivesi is about 45 km, and only 19 km to the village of Kuhmoinen. Tampere, Lahti, Jyväskylä, and Hämeenlinna are all within a little over an hour’s drive, while Helsinki is about 2.5 hours away.

Lake Pitkävesi stretches approximately 10 kilometers in length and two kilometers in width. The cottages are surrounded by untouched natural shoreline, offering a true sense of peace and privacy.

Today, Tuomaala is an organic family farm that has been cared for by the same family for over a century. The land stretches along the lake for about 3 km, giving each cottage a spacious and secluded atmosphere for boating, walking, and relaxing in nature.

In 2007, the original farmhouse was rebuilt in the style of the old one, preserving its traditional charm. Around the farm, you will find historical buildings that have been thoughtfully converted into guest accommodations, including:

  • A traditional, spacious log house: Pajamäki
  • A modern eco-friendly log cottage, completed in spring 2021: Villa Vanamo

Both offer a peaceful and authentic Finnish countryside experience, surrounded by nature.

About the Village of Päijälä

Päijälä is a small but lively and picturesque village, especially vibrant during the summer months.

Just a short boat ride from the cottages lies Riihigalleria, an art gallery built by Niilo Suojoki, which hosts exhibitions throughout the summer.

At the heart of the village is Päijälän Pirtti, a community center that serves as a venue for various events and local markets. On summer Saturdays, a library service is open there, and a scenic nature trail of about 2 kilometers begins nearby.

By the village bridge, you’ll also find a small local market every Saturday morning, where local vendors sell their produce and crafts.

The village’s 100-year-old prayer house, maintained by the Päijälä Christian Association, opens in July as a “Road Church” (Tiekirkko) and occasionally features small art exhibitions.

From Tuomaala Farm, you can rent canoes and arrange transport to the starting point of a 17 km paddling route along Lake Pitkävesi. Paddle back to the village or directly to your cottage at your own pace.
For an added experience, you can also include an overnight stay at a sauna cabin, complete with a relaxing sauna evening by the lake.

Good to Know Before You Arrive

Please note that you will need a car to reach the cottages — there is no public transportation available in the area.
Also, the nearest grocery store is over 20 km away, so we recommend doing your shopping in advance.

At the Tuomaala cottages, you can truly enjoy peace and privacy. Whether it’s fishing, picking berries and mushrooms, or simply relaxing in nature, your time is your own.

In the evening, you can unwind in the sauna, or at Villa Vanamo, soak in the outdoor hot tub while gazing at the lake. The sunsets over the water are simply breathtaking.

All cottages are fully equipped with modern amenities, so you can truly relax and recharge during your holiday.

We also sell firewood and organic oat flakes directly from the farm.
